Have you ever thought why google's home page is entirely white?
it's an understanding with electricity generating companies. White background increases power usage. And black background needs the minimum power to get displayed in a monitor. So make your background black colour or any dark image.
@ u can use 'hibernation' to reduce startup time and turn off time.
@ when you are just hearing music, turn your monitor off.
@ when performing tasks of long time (disk defragmentation, formatting) turn your monitor off.
@ Buy LCD or LED monitors instead of a CRT
